I feel like ‘mad scientists’ were a staple of the childhood cartoons and movies I grew up with, and maybe that’s why the idea to do a scientist blanket has been lingering in the back of my mind for so long. From Pinky and the Brain (Pinky: “Gee Brain, what are we gonna do tonight?” Brain: “The same thing we do every night, try to take over the world!”) to Doc Brown in Back to the Future (Doc: “One point twenty-one gigawatts! One point twenty-one gigawatts! Great Scott!” Marty: “What-what the hell is a gigawatt?”) my childhood was filled with characters trying to change the world with science.

But it wasn’t just the “mad” scientists that influenced my younger self. We also had Ms. Frizzle and her magic school bus and Bill Nye the Science Guy. Science was everywhere and it shaped my curiosity. While I may have gone down the more artsy route in my adult life, that curiosity fostered by an early interest in science fed a deep well of creativity that has come to manifest itself in my crochet work. And with my Science Unicorn C2C crochet blanket, I can blend science and creativity into a fun blanket for my children. And you can, too!

Gauge and Size

• This chart is 60 squares by 90 squares
• The approximate finished size using the recommended medium worsted weight yarn and hook size is 45″x68″ or 114x173cm
• Gauge will vary depending on the brand of yarn used and your personal tension, but a 7×7 square made with the recommended medium worsted weight yarn and hook should be approximately 5”x5” or 13x13cm. Your personal gauge can affect the finished size by several inches/centimeters.
