I grew up on ’80s movies. Many of my childhood memories are of movie marathons with my family. On Friday nights me and my siblings would lay out our sleeping bags on the living room floor and my mom would pop big bowls of popcorn, bake homemade brownies, and maybe if we were really lucky, we would have some ice cream.

Our family favorite was the Indiana Jones films. Our boxed VHS set was weather-worn in the corners from constant use. My personal favorite was Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, though I suspect I liked that one best as it was the only Indiana Jones film to have a kid character, Short Round. Now that I am (mostly) grown up, I have a much deeper appreciation for the other films.

But one scene that always stood out the most to me was in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Indy and company are riding horseback through a stunning canyon; the rock walls somehow both alive and ancient, and carved by time. The music builds as our hero team approaches. The scene changes and suddenly we get the full majesty of Petra, awash in bright sunlight and the camera panning high to make us, as the viewer, feel small to fully appreciate the majesty and grandeur of its size and scope.

Petra has remained high on my list of places I would like to see before I die (though I am slightly saddened I won’t have to traverse booby traps and fight off bad guys). As I’ve grown up I have really come to appreciate the real Petra, and not just the fictitious, booby-trapped hiding place of the Holy Grail. Its history is just as fascinating!

Petra, situated in modern-day Jordan, is an ancient city carved into vibrant red sandstone cliffs, dating back to around 300 BCE. Established as the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom, Petra flourished as a major trading hub due to its strategic location along the caravan routes linking the Arabian Peninsula, Egypt, and the Mediterranean. Its architectural marvels, including the iconic Treasury (Al-Khazneh) and the Monastery (Ad Deir), showcase the Nabateans’ sophisticated engineering and artistic prowess. In the 1st century CE, Petra fell under Roman rule, further enhancing its prosperity. However, with the decline of trade routes and devastating earthquakes in the 4th and 6th centuries, Petra gradually declined into obscurity until its rediscovery by Western explorers in the 19th century, solidifying its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of Jordan’s rich cultural heritage.

I am at a point in my life where visiting Petra in person might not be a possibility. But if there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s using my crochet hook to ‘travel.’ The Petra design has been on my to-do list for years, but capturing its essence in pixels really put my skills to the test. And now, after all these years of sketching, tinkering, and playing around in Stitch Fiddle, I am so thrilled to finally present Petra: A Rose-Red City, a free c2c crochet blanket pattern for your wanderlust pleasure!

• Medium Worsted Weight Yarn I recommend Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran. For natural fibers, I recommend Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran or Hobbii Friends Wool
  • 575 yards Blue
  • 685 yards Soft White
  • 725 yards Tan
  • 615 yards Pink
  • 490 yards Red
  • 580 yards Black

• H/8 – 5.00mm Crochet Hook
• Yarn Needle, for weaving in ends
• Scissors
• Optional – extra yarn for a border (pattern/instructions for a border are not included), about 100 yards per round
• Optional – oversized clothespins (also called beach towel clips) to use as yarn bobbins for easier color changes

Skill Level

• This project is rated easy or advanced beginner (a knowledge of C2C is required)

Gauge and Size

• This chart is 60 squares by 90 squares
• The approximate finished size using the recommended medium worsted weight yarn and hook size is 45″x68″ or 114x173cm
• Gauge will vary depending on the brand of yarn used and your personal tension, but a 7×7 square made with the recommended medium worsted weight yarn and hook should be approximately 5”x5” or 13x13cm. Your personal gauge can affect the finished size by several inches/centimeters.
