Waffle Rib Stitch Tutorial

Today we are going to learn the waffle rib stitch. This stitch is great for beginners and is textually appealing. It’s just alternating half double crochets between front and back loops. That’s it! It also has great drape. You could easily use it for a snuggly throw or an oversized sweater. And sweater weather is right around the corner.

Materials

  • Yarn of choice
  • Hook size to match yarn weight
  • Scissors

Stitches and Terms

Half Double Crochet (hdc) – Yarn over, insert hook into designated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook. Half double crochet made.

Front Loop Only (flo) – Work stitch in the front loop only.

Back Loop Only (blo) – Work stitch in the back loop only.

This stitch pattern is worked in an even number of stitches. To begin your sample swatch or project, chain an even number of stitches.

Row 1. Hdc in the third chain from your hook (the starting chain counts as hdc), hdc in each chain across, turn.

Row 2. Ch 2 (counts as a hdc now and throughout), *hdc in the blo of the next stitch, hdc in the flo in the next stitch,* repeat across until the last two stitches, hdc in the blo of the next stitch, hdc in the top of the ch 2, turn.

Repeat row 2 until your piece reaches your desired length.
