Is there anything that says ‘home’ more than a freshly baked loaf of banana bread? Maybe. But for the purposes of today’s blog post the answer is no. There is nothing that evokes the home-y feelings of childhood more than a freshly baked loaf of banana bread. And how about we throw in some chocolate chips? Yes. Get in my mouth!
Chocolate Chip Banana Bread
Nothing says 'home' quite like warm, delicious banana bread. Great for sharing!

- 9"x5" loaf pan
- cooling rack
Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar granulated
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
- 2 egg
- 3 very ripe bananas mashed
- 1/2 cup buttermilk see notes
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350F/180C. Grease 9×5-inch loaf pan.
- In a large mixing bowl, mix butter and sugar until well mixed. Stir in eggs until well mixed. Stir in bananas, buttermilk, and vanilla until smooth. Stir in flour baking soda, cinnamon, and salt until just moistened. Stir in chocolate chips.
- Pour batter into greased pan. Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool ten minutes on a cooling rack.
- Loosen sides of loaves from pan; remove from pan and place top side up on the cooling rack. Cool for two hours before slicing. Store tightly wrapped at room temperature for up to four days.
Notes
Buttermilk Substitutions
- Powdered Buttermilk – Available at your local grocery store with the other powdered milks. Use 1 Tbsp powdered buttermilk and 1/2 cup water. Add water at the same time as mashed bananas and vanilla extract. Add powdered buttermilk with the other dry ingredients.
- Milk and Lemon Juice – Mix 2 tsps lemon juice with 1/2 cup milk. Let sit 5 minutes.
- Yogurt – Use 1/2 cup plain yogurt.
